Careers in Accounting
The scope of work of the professional accountant in public practice is virtually unlimited. For one client, the accountant may only prepare an income tax return once a year. For others, it may be financial statements or management consultant services that are provided. An accountant may also act as an arbitrator, expert witness, trustee or personal representative.

Specific duties vary widely among the four major fields of accounting: public accountants, management accountants, government accountants and auditors, and internal auditors. Computers are rapidly changing the nature of the work for most accountants, expanding opportunities for more technical duties and even software development. Increasingly, accountants are undertaking the role of personal financial advisor, an area fueled by client demand.
